Students will:
- Learn about the basic photographic elements, such as lighting, framing, and composition.
- Participate in photo challenges, where students are given a topic such as reflections, framing a shot, or sunsets. Using a school-issued camera, they take photos that fit the topic and then create a slideshow to present.
- Utilize a photo editing software called GIMP. We follow tutorials to learn how to use the software and edit photos to enhance the appearance of images.

Below are two examples of basic photographic elements: The Rule of Thirds on the left & Framing a Shot on the right.

Photo Editing with GIMP
GIMP is a photo editing software similar to Photoshop, which we use to edit images. Below is 7th grade student Cailyn Brecht's Water Reflection Effect assignment.
|
This is a technique done in GIMP that is time consuming but the result looks as if the text is breaking apart. The top one is by 7th grade student Tristan Alexander and the bottom is by Kellynda Reyna.
|
This photo is by 8th grade student Ashlee Jenkins. It was done by blending two photos together.
|
Here is another blended photo by Madison Peck, an 8th grader here at SMS.
|
7th Grader Cadence Cure superimposed a face onto an object with the photo below.
|
Gabby Trevino blended her photo into this background using a different blending technique with GIMP.
